Abstract | The relationships between health personnel and patients are reflected largely by interpersonal communication. In the emergency care setting, therapeutic communication enables the nurse to gain the patient's confidence and cooperation in the shortest possible time. The main qualities that render the nurse capable of efficient communication are a mature personality, a positive attitude and understanding of the patient's emotional reactions to injury. Aside from a high level of motivation, she also needs wide professional knowledge, which is acquired through continuous education. These qualities and skills enable her to accept the patient as an individual with all the specific problems arising from his injury. Special features of communication with a deceased patient's family are discussed. | |
