Abstract     Nurse's work in the accidents and emergency centre is highly specific. She comes daily in contact with large numbers of trauma victims who may harbour a wide variety of microorganisms and viruses. Injuries of personnel with contaminated objects are also more common than in other hospital departments. This increases the risk of infectionbeing spread from the patient to the nurse. The report deals with the sources of infection, the main causative organisms and the routes of their spread. Preventive measures laid down in the Hospital Guidelines for Infection Control are discussed. Excessive workload, a common problem in all emergency departments, should not serve the nurse as an excuse for being negligent about her own safety. Constant care to avoid injury and infection is an important aspect of her daily work.
