Abstract     Accidents are a major problem of public health in Slovenia. They are a frequent cause of disability and death. Their consequences can be alleviated by proper first aid and emergency care. During first aid care, the victim's clothes and footwear are left in place, immobilization being applied over the clothing. Severely injured persons are transported to the emergency centre on a vacuum mattress. This must be covered with a sheet to facilitate subse-quent transfers. At the emergency centre, the splints and clothing are removed to permit evaluation and detection of concealed injuries. Any injury to the musculoskeletal system is treated by the nurse as a fracture. During removal of immoblization, the extremity is supported above and below the fracture site, the bone fragments being drawn gently apart. Clothing is always removed first from the healthy and then from the injured side. If fracture is suspected or the clothes are wet, they are cut along the seams. All jewellery is removed to avoid problems with swelling and difficulties during x-ray examination. Temporary immobilizaton of the upper extremity is accomplished with triangular bandages. Sandbags are used for the lower extremities. This should prevent all movement of the fractured bone until the patient receives definitive treatment.
