Abstract     Backgraund. Since the introduction of effective histamine H2-receptor antagonists, the frequency of elective surgery for peptic ulcer has markedly declined. The majority of patients is operated due to lifthreatening complications of peptic ulcer disease. Methods. 587 patients was operated at the Department of Hastroenterologic Surgery because of the peptic ulcer of the stomach and 1635 patients because of the peptic ulcer of the duodenum between January Ist 1973 and December 31st 1995. Indications and types of operations are shown. Results. In this period, the number of patients with peptic ulcer which required surgical treatment has markedly declined. The relationship between indications for surgical treatment has changed. Conclusions. Since the introduction of the effective conservative treatment, surgery is required only for the complications of peptic ulcer disease. Specific considerations in the choice of operation therefore include the body habitus of the patient and the type of complication.
