Abstract     Backgraund. The number of surgical procedures performed for peptic ulcer decreased in recent years. The majority of patients operated upon today, undergoes the procedure because of peptic ulcer complications. Despite the low postoperative mortality after elective surgery, 10 to 20% patients suffer the consequences of surgery. Conclusion. A better understanding of gastric pathophysiology allows more logical choice of initial operation and treatment of complex disorders after operation.
