Abstract		In this article the beginnings of forensic medicine and the medical expertise in some ancient civilizations and cultures are shortly summarized. Additionally, penal codes of the Middle Ages and those of Empress Maria Theresa are mentioned. The author showsthe work of forensic medical experts in Carniola, the teaching of forensic medicine at the surgical lyceum in Ljubljana, and the work of prominent prosecutory and expert writers until 1945. The historical survey of the pedagogical, scientific and professional work of the Institute, its protagonists and first of all its director, academician Prof. Janez Milčinski are presented in this article, as well as the famous forensic medicine school in Ljubljana.
