Abstract     The extent of the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs in Slovenia was assessed on the basis of the databases of the Institute of Public Health of the Republic of Slovenia and statistical data from other medical social, economic and criminological sources, and special studies of pupils and adult population. Available data indicate high consumption of alcohol and other drugs in Slovenia. The average annual consumption of pure alcohol per inhabitant has achieved an average level of 10 liters between 1990 to 1994. The high consumption of spirits and the high level of mortality caused by alcoholic liver cirrhosis are especially problematic. Use of cannabis, heroin, cocaine and other unlegislated drugs among youth is also frightening. The progressing of the problem is expected to be faster than the solution. AIDS epidemy in connection with intravenous drug use is threatening if HIV is introduced into this population.
