Abstract     Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is currently the prevailing and most successful method used for toxicological analyses and therefore also in one of the specialistfields, i.e. the analysis of psychoactive substances. It yields data on gaschromatographic properties and the structure of analyzed substances and provides high accuracy and reliability of results. The paper briefly describes the fundamentals of the GC-MS method, its general role in systematic and quantitative toxicologicai analysis and, in more detail, its use for the determination of drugs of abuse and psychoactive substances (opiates, cannabinoids, cocaine, amphetamines, LSD, benzodiazepins). Sampling and drug stability in biological samples are discussed separately. Problems in the interpretation of anaNtical results are illustrated by anaytical cases from Slovenia and are accompanied by a brief discussion about factors which may have a decisive effect on the results of analyses and therefore may significantly affect decisions adopted in court procedures or during treatment.
