Abstract     The goals of therapy for ulcers are relief from pain, promotion of healing, and prevention of recurrence. Therapeutic strategies are aimed at balancing agressive factors (gastric acid secretion, pepsin, Helicobacter pylori) against defensive and cytoprotective factors (bicarbonate secretion, mucus secretion, prostaglandin production). Agents that reduce gastric acid secretion (H2 histmin antagonists, proton pump inhibitors) promote healing. Cytoprotective agents (sucralfate, bismuth salts, alginic acid, and the prostaglandin agonists) and antacids are also effective. Eradication of Helicobacter pylori with combination of antibotics and PPI promotes healing and reduces the recurrence of the ulcers.
