Abstract     Backgraund. Infection with Helicobacter pylori (HP) has a oabdenuc dunebsuibs, Iyr aun was ti evakyate tge extebd if GO gastritis and dynamics of infection by age groups in biopsies of symptomatic patients in Slovenia. Methods and results: At the Institute of Pathology University of Ljubljana during 1995/96 we examined 3671 adult and 554 pediatric endoscopic gastric biopsies with the histological changes of gastritis. All biopsies were stained by Kreyberg method and modified Giemsa stain for HP evaluation. We calculated the percentage of HP gastritis, as well as other types of gastritis by age groups. We found that HP gastritis is the most frequent type of gastritis representing 47,6% of all adult cases. The infection showed a rising incidence until 50 years of age, afterwards it showed a rising incidence until 50 years of age, afterwards it showed a slow declination. HP gastritis was followed in frequency by the histologically unclassified cases (35,8%) and by the reactive gastritis (16,2%). Other special forms of gastritis represented less than 1% of cases. The pediatric cases showed proportionally higher percentage of reactive and histologically unclassified cases and lower percentage of HP gastritis as compared with the adults. There was no significant sex difference in the percentage of HP gastritis, on the other hand women showed higher percentage of reactive gastritis. Conclusions: Our results show a high percentage of HP gastritis in the symptomatic gastritis patients in Slovenia. The incidence is comparable with the results of HP infection from the epidemiological studies of asymptomatic population in Slovenia. The results point out the relatively high percentage of reactive gastritis, causefd by chemical agents, including drugs.
