Abstract     Backgraund. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the usefulness of two polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods - one for the detection of Helicobacter pylori in biopsy specimens and another for molecular-epidemiology studies of slovenian H. pylori strains. Results and conclusions. 16SrRNA-based PCR assay for the detection of H. pylori was compared with three standard diagnostic methods on 26 fresh gastric biopsy specimens. Bacteria were found in 23, 19, 24, and 26 samples, by PCR, culture, the rapid-urease test, and histology, respectively. Archival formalin-fixed biopsy specimens were found inappropriate for the molecular analyses. ureB PCR coupled by restriction fragment length polymorphism of PCR products was found to be suitable for analyzing of the genetic heterogenity of H. pylori isolates obtained from patients in Slovenia.
