Abstract     Helicobacter pylori has been recognised as an important factor in the pathogenesis of the chronic gastritic, duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer and gastric carcinoma. H. pylori infects an estimated 50% of the world's population, b ut only a small proportion of individuals develope clinical symptoms of gastritis, peptic ulceration or gastric cancer. The variations in disease presentation may be due to factors that influence the bacterial virulence or the host response to infection with H. pylori. In the article we summarise some of the information regarding the local cellular and humoral immunity; among them we stress our observation, that the IL-2 receptor expression is enhanced in patients, that developed the gastric ulcer compared to patients, that developed achronic gastritis without the ulcer.
