Abstract     Introduction. Langerhans cells (LC) as antigen presenting cells have an important role in cell type of immune response. Research on laryngeal mucosa and mucosa of oral cavity has showed tight relationship between number of Langerhans cells and the density of inflammatory infiltrate. The aim of our preliminary study is to present Langerhans cells in gastric mucosa using new immunohistochemical method and to reveal whether the number of Langerhans cells is influenced by the presence of Helicobacter pylori (HP) in chronic active gastritis. Material and methods. On 8 cases of HP positive and 8 cases of HP negative antral gastritis immunohistochemical method of streptavidin-biotin complex has been performed. To make Langerhans cells visible, monoclonal antibody CD1 a was used. We compared two age balanced groups of patients. Results. In both groups of patients we obtained presence of LC. LC were obtained among the epithelial cells of foveoli as well as in the lamina propria. Only two cases from both groups showed negative reaction. The mean number of LC in the group of HP positive gastritis was 1.5 per 5 consecutive field of 400x magnification, and 1.75 in the group of HP negative gastritis. Conclusion. With immunohistochemical streptavidin-biotin complex method and monoclonal antibody CD1a is possible to present LC in gastric mucosa. Preliminary results showed that HP has not influenced the number of LC in gastric mucosa. The number of LC in gastric mucosa did not follow the intensity of chronic inflammatory response.
