Abstract | Beckgraund. Syncope is sudden, temporary loss of consciounsness with loss of postural tone. Consciousness is regained without therapeutical measures. Syncope is a symptom and the cause has to be defined. Cardiogenic syncope has to be diagnosed as soon as possible because sudden death is common in such patients. Vasovagal syncope is the commonest noncardiogenic syncope and it belongs to the group of reflex syncopes. The mechanism of reflex syncope is abnormal neurocirculatory reflex excitation. Reflex archs seems to be intact. Reflex archs are damaged in orthostatic syncope, which has also other causes like diminished intravascular volume. The most frequent neurological syncope evolves because of ischemia of brainstem, caused with vertebral artery hypoperfusion. Conclusions. Neurological and psychogenic syncope are rare. Therapy of reflex, orthostatic, neurologic and psychogenic syncope depends on many factors. Majority of patients with benign cause of syncope do not need any therapy. | |
