Abstract     oxygen reactive intermediates (ORI) have an important role in the development of chronic inflammation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of ORI scavengers to suppress periodontal inflammation. Experimental periodontitis was induced by ligatures placed around teeth P2, P3, P4 and M1 in the upper and lower jaws of 15 beagle dogs. Nine month after the beginning of the experiment, the liqatures were removed and all teeth were supragingivally scaled. The dogs were divided in three groups of five animals each. Group 1 received liposome-encapsulated superoxide dismutase (S), group 2 liposome-encapsulated catalase (C), and group 3 both enzymes. The drugs were delivered subgingivally (20 micro l per tooth) with a syringe on a daily basis for a period of 6 weeks. Gingival index (GI), probing depth (PD) and epithelial attachment loss (EAL) were evaluated at baseline and at the end of experiment. Statistical analysis was done with ANOVA and Student's t-test. Statistically significant improvement in GI (p<0.05) and PD (p<0.05) was found in the groups treated with S and with both enzymes.
