Abstract     A questionnaire survey was carried out on 199 children aged 16.3 +- 0.5 years in a secondary school in Ljubljana. The aims of the survey were to evaluate the children's knowledge of oral hygiene, prevention of caries and periodontal disease, and to assess the effects of oral health education offered in primary school. The results showed that 65.8% of the children had acquired most of their knowledge of oral hygiene from parents. Comparison with a previous survey conducted 10 years ago revealed that nurses and teachers had assumed a more active part in teaching the children how to care for their teeth. As in the previous survey, dental floss was used by only 5% of the children. Most respondents reported using fluoridated dentifrices and a toothbrush with synthetic bristles. As many as 49.2% were not seeing a dentist regularly.
