Abstract     In a population sample of 199 children attending a secondary school in Ljubljana, clinical oral examinations were carried out to determine the condition of teeth and periodontal tissues, and to assess the impact of an ongoing large-scale prventive programme. The greastest amounts of plaque and calculus were found in molar regions and in mandibular intercanine regions. The highest level of cleanliness was observed in premolar regions, which also showed the highest prevalence of traumatic changes, including gingibal recession (12.6%) and hard tissue lesions (3%). Only 5% of the the children reported using dental floss on a regular basis. This explained the marked frequency of bleeding observed on probing of the interdental papilla as well as the higher prevalence of deep pockets (4-6 mm) along mesial and distal tooth surfaces as compared to buccal and lingual surfaces. The results of this study suggest that oral hygiene instruction programmes should place greater emphasis on regular use of dental floos and spiral brush for the maintenance of healthy interdental spaces, as well as on thorough brushing of critical plaque retention sites in molar and lower intercanine regions.
