Abstract     Over the past decades, osseointegrated implants have become a successful prosthodontic modality for treatment of total or partial edentulism. The method is used increasingly in the world and is likely to become more widespread also in Slovenia. The basic criteria for selecting the patients and predicting treatment outcome are presented. Indications and contraindications are related to the patient's general health, oral cavity status and shape and quality of the jaw bone. Treatment outcome is determined by subjective and objective factors. Successful long-term function of osseointegrated implants depends on good oral hygiene, close supervision by the dentist and prompt tratment if evidence of inflammation or radiolucency is noted in the surrounding area.
