Abstract		Evaluation of tooth mobility is an essential part of clinical oral examination. It is important for the detection of periodontal disease, for predicting its course and for assessing the effects of different therapeutic procedures. With a suitably constructed electronic device, we have managed to record tooth mobility, including sedondary movement, at loads of 0.0 to 1 N with an accuracy of 0.7 micro m. Displacement in the direction of the loading force is recorded at the site of action along the incisal adge of the tooth. The reproducibility of measurements is made possible by setting and fixation of parameters. Changes in individual teeth are evaluated from force-displacement (F-U) diagrams. Assessment of initial tooth mobility as a quantitative method is more suitable for research purposes than for clinical practice. The method opens new possibilities to evaluate periodontal treatment and investigate the physiology of tooth mobility.
