Abstract     Breast cancer is treated by various methods depending on whether we have to deal with primary cancer or recurrence, which may be either locoregional or systemic. In the majority of primary breast cancers, a combination treatment including surgery, irradiation and drug therapy is used. Operative treatment of primary cancer can be either breast-preserving, or radical, i. e. consisting of complete removal of the breast. Axillary lymphadenectomy should invariably be accomplished after each breast-preserving operation. Radiotherapy is only occasionaly used after breast amputation. Systemic treatment of breast cancer patients includes chemotherapy plus tamoxiphene, and is aimed at improving the patient's survival rate. A combination treatment consisting of surgery, radiotherapy and medication, is also applied in recurent breast cancer.
