Abstract     Backgraund. It is becoming clearer from year to year that selenium (Se) plays an important part in people's state of health as well as in the states of disease. Therefore it is very important to know the status of selenium in the healthy population and/or its normal values. The aim of our study was to determine the status of selenium in healthy children of the NE Slvoenia region. Methods. Serum Se levels of 122 healthy children aged 1 day to 18 years from Maribor and its oeryphery during the period of 1/1993 to 6/1995 were determined by hydride atomic spectrometry. Results. The results of the analysis of serum Se of newborn children were 50% lower than the serum Se values of their mothers. A connection was established between the child's age and serum Se values. In the first month of life serum Se values decrease, whereas after the sixth month they begin to rise gradually. In the group of infants (1-2 yrs) serum Se was 74,9+-9,7 micro g/L, in the preschool group (3-5 yrs) it was 85,5+-10,0 micro g/L, in the group of schoolchildren (11-13 yrs) 93,9+-9,3 micro g/L. The differences between serum Se values of the youngest group and those of all the other groups are statistically significant (p < 0,05). Conclusions. Serum Se values increase gradually and at school age they reach the values that are found in healthy adults.
