Abstract     The research SJM '96 is the eighth in a series of evenly distributed studies which round off an almost twenty-five years lasting investigation of basic data on sports-recreation activity obtained on the basis of a representative sample of adult population in the state of Slovenia. The results show that, on the one hand, the number of sport-active adults has decreased. The decrease in not alarming but should not be neglected, either. On the other hand, the data analysis has shown an extraordinary increase of regular and professionally guided recreational activity which, from a professional point of view means a new and important quality leap. Perhaps, with due reservation, it could be said that the formation of a sport doctrine has begun which gives to the idea "sports as a factor of quality of life" broader and more profound dimensions.
