Abstract		Slovene doctors prescribe antibiotics very often, so they represent the second most prescribed drug in our country following cardiovascular drugs. An analysis of data, collected by Slovene Institute of Public Health, which is constantly following drug consumption in the country was made by the authors of this article. A constant increase of antibiotics consumption is observed in the developed countries in the last ten years. There is the same trend in Slovenia, although Slovene doctors seem to prescribe too many macrolide antibiotics and too many penicillinase resistant combinations. The over-all impression is that they had too soon forgotten old, but still efficient and much /ess expensive types of antibiotics. The final part of the article presents guidelines for antibiotic treatment, elaborated by Clinic for Infectious Diseases of Slovene Medical Faculty. They address especially general practitioners, since they prescribe most of the drugs in Slovenia.
