Abstract		The number of factors that influence drug prescribing in general practice is much higher than in specialist services. The article explains two different approaches for the explanation of drug prescribing: the simple one taking into account only disease and medical knowledge as the determining factors, and the holistic one, explaining other determinants, specific for general practice as well. Factors from the holistic model can be grouped in three categories: medical knowledge, doctor-patient relationship and economics. The importance of each of the categories and the criteria for quality in prescribing in general practice are discussed.
