Abstract     Education in drug prescription is a necessary part of study at medical faculties. It can be taught as part oi pharmacology, which is spanning from molecular biology to treatment at the bedside. /n developed western countries pharmacology is taught in two different ways: as part of medical or pharmacy study, where pharmacotherapeutics is included, or as experimental pharmacology for scientific laboratories, situated mostly in pharmaceutical industry. Teaching of drug prescription should be the final act in the education of clinical pharmacology. In last few years in many European countries, e.g. Germany, clinical pharmacology has been mentioned in the planned medical curriculum for the first time. However, in both, these and others, e.g. Scandinavian countries, Great Britain, USA, Australia, where clinical pharmacology is taught under this name, pharmacotherapeutics is an essential part of medical study. At the only Medical faculty in the state of Slovenia, pharmacology is taught in the third or third-and-fourth year of the study (there are no colleges before entering medical faculty!). Students learn basic principles of pharmacology and pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics of "more important" groups of drugs or individual drugs. They have not yet studied either pathology or clinical subjects. At this stage they can learn only the technical principles of prescription writing. In the near future it would be essential that in addition to the present teaching in pharmacology a separate Cime in one of the last two years in planned medical curriculum should be reserved for clinical pharmacology (or pharmacotherapeutics). In this course students should study the right choice of drugs as well as doctrines of proper use of drugs. This kind of study should be performed by clinical and partly pharmacological teachers.
