Abstract     The methods of hardening gelatin microcapsule walls are presented. Microencapsulation by simple and complex coacervation is summarised, and examples of colloid wall materials are given. Hardening of microcapsule walls can be accomplished by (a) crosslinking and formation of new covalent bonds or (b) by non covalent hardening, where hydrogen bonds are usually formed between gelatin molecules. Often, both types of processes run simultaneously or successively. Several types of reagents are used for hardening and aldehydes are the most common. The majority of data were taken from the specialised information system on microencapsulation, which had been built at our Department.
