Abstract     Twenty-five Arab children have been diagnosed as suffering from subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) in the past twelve years in Kuwait. All were from social classes II and III. History of measles infection was found in the first two years of life in all but one children. Presenting signs and symptoms appeared between 1 and 11 years after the infection, the commonest being frequent falls, convulsions and gait disturbances as well as behavioural changes and mental deterioration. EEG was done in all patients and was of great help in early diagnosis, as it was characteristic in 16 patients and highly suggestive in the others. CT scan of the head done in 19 patients showed abnormalities in 8. No therapy was found to be effective. Eight patients died within 1 to 12 years of diagnosis, in three the disease became arrested, nine are presently in a vegetative state, and five children were lost to follow-up.
