Abstract     Care of the child and his health has been present throughout the history of humankind; millenaries have not changed the basis of the moral-ethical relationship towards new born babies and young children, while the development of medicine has brought novelities in eych period. Pediatrics began to develop more intensive during the Renaissance when the first professional book, dedicated entirely to a child, was written. A big step forward was made during the Age of Englightenment, while modern pediatrics is a "child" of the second half of the 19th and 20th centuries. Slovene pediatrics mainly followed the professional trends in the German speaking world. The first pediatric hospital was founded in Ljubljana in 1865, four decades after Vienna. It was the result of the enthusiasm of dr. Viljem Kovač and of the city authorities also. More intensive work began after regular sources of income were obtained, enabling the erection of new premises on Streliška Street in 1889. Doctors working there operated according to the principles of medical doctrine of that time, and their results were comparable to those of Vienna. During World War I the hospital was occupied by the army. After the war its director became the first Slovene pediatrician-Dr.Bogdan Derč. Very modest equipment demanded the cooperation with the hospital on Zaloška Street - the use of its laboratory, X-ray equipment, etc. Dr.Derč introduced dispensary pediatric work, which in 30 years spread all over Slovenia. He also propagated breast-feeding and healthy food for babies, and introduced vaccination of children. The 20th century brought better social care of children asylums for the deaf-mute, the blind, the handicapped and others. Two imporotant turning points in the development of Slovene pediatrics were the foundation of the Institute for Health and Hygienic protection of Children in 1923 and the School for nurses and sisters.
