Abstract     We report on a case of y newborn baby girl with a cutaneous form of neonatal lupus syndrome, representing a model of a passively acquired autoimmunity. Maternal autoantibodies against the Ro/SS-A and La/SS-B antigens are transmitted throuogh the placenta and may cause eutaneous, heart or liver defects, or blood anomalies. Treatment of cutaneous lesions consists of locally applied corticosteroids; while for heart lesions, mainly manifested as irreversible complete heart block, the insertion of a pacemaker is the only solution. The newborn baby girl had an isolated cutaneous lesion, which slowly and spontaneously regressed. A positive correlation in the levels of autoantibodies between the mother and the newborn was found.
