Abstract     Febrile neutropenia (FN) as a consequence of treatment of malignant diseases is an emergency because of possible infection complications. FN is a clinical state with an absolute neutrophil count below 0.5 X 10g/I and either a single temperature measurement higher than 38.5 oC or higher than 38 oCin two or more observations during a 12-hour period. Based both on the clinical course and microbiological data, each febrile episode in neutropenic patients could be classified retrospectively into one of the following categories: microbiologically documented infection, clinically documented infection and fever of unknown origin (possible intection). Early empirical therapy and modification of the initial antibiotic therapy is today a standard practice. Low risk patients who could be safely treated as out-patients or at home should be defined in the future.
