Abstract     Cardiovascular disease is an important cause of death in CAPD patients and arterial hypertension is one of the most important risk factors. We evaluated blood pressure control and antihypertensive treatment, presence of cardiovascular disease and risk factors in 58 CAPD patients in the Center for CAPD at the Nephrology Dept. of the University Medical Center Ljubljana. At the start of CAPD treatment 56 (96.6%) patients (pts) had hypertension. Sixteen (27.6%) remained hypertensive. Forty-five (76.6%) pts were on antihypertensive drugs, most often calcium antagonists. Hypervolemia was registered in 69% of patients. 76% of patients had other cardiovascular diseases. We conclude that in our CAPD patients blood pressure control was inadequate despite a wide use of antihypertensives. Most of them had one or more overt cardiovascular diseases and risk factors. Careful evaluation of fluid and sodium balance and selection of antihypertensive drugs are required for long-term management of arterial hypertension in CAPD patients.
