Abstract     The red blood cell membrane is represented as a trialayer structure. Two layers represent the lipid bilayer, and the third one the spectrin network attached to the bilayer at the inner side. In the model, the layers are coupled, however, they can slide by one another. Based on the expression for the elastic free energy of a single layer the expression for the elastic free energy of the trilayer is given. The expression obtained is of the same form as in the case of the bilayer couple model. Hence, it could be concluded that in the trilayer couple model the spectrin network has no special importance in determining characteristic shapes of the red blood cell.
