Abstract     Background and aim of the study. Family history of coronary heart disease presages coronary risk in next generation. Increased susceptibility is either consequence of certain inherited traits or family aggregation of certain living habits. The aim of this study was to determine the differences between the children of parents with or without premature coronary artery disease. Subjects and methods. 114 children aged 6 to 18 years, 61 boys and 53 girls were included in this case - control study. The case group consisted of 57 children (31 boys and 26 girls, mean age 13,3) whose parents had suffered myocardial infarction before age of 45 years. The control group consisted of 57 children (30 boys, 27 girls, mean age 13,4 years) whose parents had no atherosclerotic diseases. Physical examination and following blood measurements were performed: total cholesterol (CH), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-cholesterol), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol), triglycerides, apoproteins A1 and B, lipoprotein(a), uric acid, glucose, insulin, fibrinogen, coagulation factor VII (FVII), euglobulin clot lysis time (ECLT), tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) antigen and activity and plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1) antigen and activity. We analysed the results according to the groups, sex and pubertal stage. Results. Forty-eight children in case group and only two in control group had lipid modified diet, almost half of children in both groups were physically inactive. There were only two smokers in the control group. One third of children in both groups were overweight. The children in case group had significantly higher values of diastolic blood pressure (83+-9.12 vs 73+-10.3 mm Hg, p less th.0.001), of waist - hip ratio (0.81+-0.06 vs 0.78+-0.06, p less th.0.005), of LDL-cholesterol (2.73+-0.55 vs 2.45+-0.58 mmol/l, p less.th0.01), of ratio between CH and LDL-cholesterol (2.67+-0.7 vs Abstract truncated at 2000 characters.
