Abstract     An important step in fixed prosthodontic treatment of complicated clinical cases is diagnostic waxing on mounted stone models and transfer of the model into the provisional restoration. This is achieved by two techniques, using silicone or polypropylene foil and an electric heating element with a vacuum source. Provisionals can be fabricated by a direct or an indirect procedure. The provisional restoration enables the dentist to make functional and aesthetic adjustments and provide the patient with information about the intended final restoration. Adapted provisionals also serve as useful aids for non-guided bite registration. Provisional restorative materials are divided in three main groups with different properties.
