Abstract     Many nursing training programmes fail to incorporate spiritual aspects of health care within existing curricula although it is essential for nurses to explore the concept of spirituality if it is going to be offered as a component of holistic care. The hesistancy the reflects society's and the nursing profession's attitudes towards such a taboo subject because of its rather ethereal and intuitive nature. Spirituality is often viewed as being synonymous with religion and belief in God. Spiritual awareness does not imply religiosity or piety only, but the ability to explore positively one's own attitudes and feelings about matters that are basic for our existence. The article focuses on the Christian attitudes to spirituality discussing the following spiritual needs: the meaning and the purpose of life, love and relationship with other people and God, and forgiveness.
