Abstract     The doctor in a general surgery clinic often encounters the problems related to heightened blood sugar in otherwise healthy patients, in patients beloging to the risk group for diabetes and in patients already having diabetes. The doctor should always follow the principles of the profession. Preventive work is very important, as is the realization that the he primarily deals with the patient, not only a disease entity. The work is often accompanied by certain unresolved questions in relation to the diabetological dispensary, as well as by some problems and needs. In conclusion, the author ascertains that the conditions for the realization of Saint Vincent declaration will be fullfilled with the optimization of the cooperation between general medicine and diabetology.
