Abstract     Granulomas are focal accumulations of macrophages and lymphocytes. The persistence of inflammation in granulomas is made possible bu the presence of antigenic molecules, whiche are ingested by macrophages and then presented as antigens to helper T lymphocytes. Antigenic material may persist in tissues either because of a constant influx (recurrent infections) or because it resists degradation by macrophages (talc, beryllium salts, organic dust). Granulomas in the oral cavity mostly develop as a result of recurrent influx of bacaterial antigens from infectd tooth pulp or from periodontal pockets. Some possible clinical consequences of immune events in chronically inflamed foci are discussed.
