Abstract     The results of the cross-country skiing competition, involving a group of 15 boys between 13 and 15 years of age, have been analyzed on the basis of a battery of athletic tests. The results of the cross-country skiing competition were used as a criterion for selecting the best combination of predictors, which explained a greater part of criterion variance. The best predictors used are: top speed in the 20-m athletic race (v20), speed in the 300-m athletic race (v300), lactate concetration in blood after the 300-m race (LA300) and runnig speed in the Cooper test (vCoop). This combination, represented by the regression equation for theoretical competition results: R+297.3*v20-215.7*v300-303.5*vCoop-48.8*LA300+1898.4 accounts for 71% of variance in the results achieved by young skiers in the 4-km race. It shows that such a race is, first of all, a test of endurance characterized by predominantly aerobic energy processes. It is also a test of speed endurance involving anaerobic lactate energy processes. This has been proved by lactate concentration, measuring an average of 10.8 mmol/l (SD=2.4) after the race. The regression model can be used in practice to evaluate the performance of young cross-country skiers throughout the season, particularly during the first stages of training.
