Abstract     We present 129 children aged 2-14 years of age treated surgically for cholesteatoma between 1985-1994. In 84 patients we used the "intact canal wall" technique, and in 45 patients the "canal wall down" technique. The "intact canal wall" technique was not associated with a greater occurrence of recurrent cholesteatoma. In these children minimal postoperative care was required, cavity problems were avoided, and the improvement in hearing was greater. We conclude that the "canal wall down" technique should be used only in cases with recurrent cholesteatoma or in cases with a small sclerotic mastoid.
