Abstract     Kidney biopsy provides direct information about the severity of the autoimmune response in LN patients, aids significantly in predicting both the short- and long-term outcome and in selecting appropriate therapy, and enables the most accurate monitoring of the response to therapy and follow-up of the disease course. In kidney biopsy evaluation of SLE patients, light microscopical, IF and EM tecniques should regularly be used for the establishment of the WHO classification of LN, NIH activity and chronicity indices, the distribution pattern of ID, as well as the type and severity of the tubulo-interstitial and extraglomerular vascular involvement.
