Abstract     The hypertensive crisis includes all acute increases in blood presure, the diastolic blood pressure exceeding 120 or 130 mm Hg. Sudden increases in blood pressure may directly im peril the patient's life and demand the immediate decrease of blood pressure as well as further hospitalization (extremely urgent conditions). In cases when the condition is not directly perilous to the patient's life, we have some time for urgent diagnostic procedures before the introduction of treatment (urgent conditions). The case of a female patient with hypertensive crisis, referred to the 'internal emergency outpatient department, is presented. The procedures in the emergency OPD and the course of hospitalization are described. Extremely urgent and urgent conditions are presented and the necessary measures taken at the patient's home or in the GP's consulting room are described. The basics of hospital treatment in cases of extremely urgent conditions are also given.
