Abstract | Instead of X-rays, neutrons can be used for radiographic examination of various objects. Neutron radiography, neutron radioscopy and computed neutron tomography are methods analogous to common diagnostic techniques in X-ray radiology. As neutrons are neutral nuclear particles the characteristics of their attenuation in matter are basically different from the attenuation properties of photons, and hence the radiographic properties of neutrons are different and often complementary to the radiographic properties of X-rays. Basic differences exist in the radiation sources, imaging and detection methods and in the radiological protection. Neutron radiology methods are already established non-destructive testing methods; however, their use in the field of bio-medical diagnostics is hardly ever considered and it might be worthwhile to briefly describe them here. Some advantages and limitations of their use in the bio-medical field will be given and the current status of their applications in medicine, dentistry and biology will be reviewed. In view of the interesting radiographic properties of neutrons and with the current developments in neutron source technology and neutron imaging techniques, we can expect increasing interest for neutron radiology applications in the bio-medical field. | |
