Abstract     Dentistry developed in the shadow of other branches of medicine for many centuries. It was only at the beginning of the eighteenth century that it began to progress, based on the achievements of medical science. The professional dentistry began in 1814, when the first professionally trained dentist came to Ljubljana. For hundred years, mostly foreign dentists worked in Slovenia. After 1919 first dentistry organisations were founded. These organisations strove for the rise of professionalism, as well as, they tried to introduce some order in the organisation of dentistry. During the Second World War we got the first school for dentists and the organisation of dentistry was improved remarkably, whereas dr. Rant and his close collaborators had the leading role.
