Abstract     Teeth and periodontal tissues were studied in 8 patients with the Papillon-Lefevre syndrome, as well as 32 patients with palmoplantar keratoderma Unna-Thost type. The cells of the epithelial rests of Malassez most probably react to the mastication with marked hyperplasia. Such a phenomenon is most probably analogus to the thickened horny layer on the palms and solec. The hyperplastic epithelial rests of Malassez diminish the density of the collagen network in the periodontal membrane, and therefore the fixation of the teeth in alveolae is impaired and the teeth get loose.
