Abstract		The article gives the chronology of some events important for the development of dental care for youth, from the first dental center for school children in Celje in 1928, organization of stomatological profession, as well as, activities that contributed to the development of dental centers for youth and some problems of transition to the new system of dental care in Slovenia in 1992. The development and achievements of dental care for youth are illustrated by data on personnel and working capacity and epidemiological trends in oral health of children and youth. All the achievements will be wasted if the national preventive program were not adopted. The program should define the contents, extent, financial sources, their allocation and the supervision of activities in order to realize the goals and objectives of oral health in full potential. The author stresses the importance of public dental care for youth and advocates for greater responsibility of the state in these area.
