Of three brothers, Eugene, Lawrence and Louis, Eugene already showed in his youth, when he had private teachers and professors in Miljana and later on in the 7th and 8th class of the classical grammar school in Maribor, a special aptitude for nature and collecting things of all kinds. At first he studied at the Trade Academy in Vienna, but his love for nature soon lead him to medical faculty, he graduated in Graz. From 1919 to 1922 he worked as a volunteer at the surgical department of the General Hospital in Maribor which was very significant for the rest of his life. When he was in the 7th grade, his mother moved to Vienna and his father lost nearly all his property because of bankruptcy of a certain bank in Zagreb. So he entered the grammar school in Maribor, where he stayed until his graduation. Those, who knew him personally, would never be suprised at this numerous preoccupations. He was an excellent physician, first class diagnostic, always uptodate in therapeutics. After a short sojourn in Miljana he volunteered as a doctor in Poljčane and in 1924 he became a district doctor in Podčetrtek. Here he married miss Hedwig Lovrec, the daughter of a schoolmaster. At the beginning only poor people came to his surgery, but soon his reputation grew. He became known as a good physician, as well as, surgeon.
