Abstract     Dentists were dental therapists who did only simple jobs from the field of conservative tooth treatment, dental prothetics and less demanding extractions of teeth. At the end of the nineteenth century, and at the beginning of this century these dentists were older dental technicians who had over 9 years of practice in dentistry. They performed the laboratory and therapeutic work. But they were rare, as the competition with dentists was quite strong and it was hard to be promoted to a dental therapist. The first group of dentists with the adequate dental education began to work in Slovenia at the end of 1920 s. This group, and the increasing number of dental technicians, who, with their work, forced into the field of dental therapists, made the relationship with dentists very tense. The latter fought against them in different ways, mostly with the introduction of new legislation, but they were not very successful. Eventualluy before the beginning of the Second World War many older dental technicians managed to convince the government of the necessity of foundation of dental school which would enable them to open dental surgeries without hindrance. In 1940 the first dental school was opened in Ljubljana, the first on the Balkans. During the occupation of Ljubljana, at this school many dental technicians acquired the knowledge of a dentist, which helped to a faster and more successful organization of the post-war dentistry.
