Abstract     The documentation of the Clinic for surgery and small animals of the Veterinary Faculty was overlooked. In the period between 1. 1. 1989 and 3. 12. 1994 71 dogs with symptoms of the cauda equina syndrome (CES) were established at the Clinic. Most frequently german shepards fell in (40.8%), the average age of the dogs with the CES was 7,2 years. The males were represented in 76.1%. On average, the dogs had the symptoms for 4 weeks, which prooves the chronical course of illness. In the anamnesis the owners told that the dog limps on the back leg, the state becomes even worse after a greater burdening, it refuses to jump into car and walk on the stairs. At the clinical examination the painfull lumbosacral area, weak proprioception and reflexes were established. By radiography mostly the sclerosation of the L7 and S1, spondylosis, narrowness of the intervertebral space and the emphasized transition between the last lumbar vertebra and sacrum were diagnosed. By 5 dogs the dorsal laminectomy was accomplished, 66 dogs were treated conservatively with corticosteroids and analgetics. With questionnaire the information about the success of the treatment and the momentary health condition of still living dogs were obtained. The questionnaire was filled by 38 dog owners, 16 dogs died among them also two operated dogs. The third operated dog doesn't have problems anymore, the problems of the fourth dog reappeared after four years, but in a lighter form, for the fifth dog the data were not available. Among the conservatively treated dogs one has permanent problems, by 7 dogs the problems didn't reappear, by 12 dogs still appear periodically, but in smaller extent 7.
