Abstract     Between January 1993 and December 1995, 88 loop diathermy conizations were performed at the Clinical Department of Gynecology and Perinatology in Maribor. Of these, 84 (95.4%) were performed due to abnormal cervical cytology. In 71 (80.7%) cases the colposcopic findings were suspect and in 85 (96.6%) cases preoperative punch biopsy revealed a high grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. Each patient was managed in a standard way. Under short-term general anesthesia, a loop diathermy excision of the transformation zone was performed. During the procedure, no major complications were observed. In 6 (6.8%) cases, revision was necessary in the early postoperative period due to secondary hemorrhage. The mean hospital stay was 4 days. Histopathological examination of the specimens revealed no pathology or just mild intraepithelial lesion in 3 (3.4%), moderate intraepithelial lesion in 27 (30.7%) and severe intraepithelial lesion in 55 (62.5%) cases. In two cases (2.3%) microinvasive carcinoma IA1 and in one case (1.1%) microinvasive carcinoma IA2 was found. In 73 (83.0%) women, a complete histological excision of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia was carried out. In 5 (5.6%) cases, there was an incomplete excision of the external margin and in 10 (11.4%) cases the internal margin was not excised completely. Later, radical hysterectomy was performed in one (1.1%), simple hysterectomy in three (3.4%) and reconization in two (2.3%) patients. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
