Abstract     The tissue distribution of the Clara cell 16 kD protein (CC16) was studied in rat fetuses aged 17.5 to 21.5 days using immunohistochemical methods. The whole fetuses of the timed-pregnant Wistar rats were fixed in 4% paraformaldehyde - 0.1 % glutaraldehyde in 0.1 M phosphate buffer. The fetuses were then embedded in paraffin and the sagittal sections were cut to a thickness of 5 micro m. Subsequently, the sections were immunostained using avidin-biotin-peroxidase method. A positive reaction to the CC16 protein was found in the lungs of 18.5 day old fetuses and in the kidneys from the day 19.5 of embryonal development onwards as well as in some epithelium cells of the esophagus. From the CC16 expression in the lung and esophagus it may be concluded that the CC16 is most likely the counterpart of the uteroglobin in rabbits. The renal staining may be explained as a result of the filtration in glomeruli and the reabsorbtion in kidney tubuli and not as a result of the local protein synthesis.
